DPM (Direct Part Mark) is a special technique applied in making barcode instead of a standard of barcode industry. Generally referred to as Direct Component Identification, it used to mark the parts directly on the surface without paper, label and other identification carriers.

DPM code used for identification of parts, usually the surface area for DPM code is relatively small, naturally, need choose a large coding capacity of the two dimensional symbology for DPM, such as DataMatrix which has features of high coding capacity, high density, high information security, compared with other 2D symbology, it could contains the most characters with the same size and density.

The production method of DPM code is printing barcode directly on the product through dot engraving, etching or spurting. There are three common production methods, it is laser engraving, mechanical point engraving and spurting code printing.

DPM on the surface of parts to form strong graphics and text, ans become a fixed part of the product, never lost and modified, so that products in the whole life cycle can be identified and traced. DPM code has been widely used in many industries, such as manufacturing, food supervision, pharmaceutical supervision, aerospace, etc for product tracking management.

Usually, there are several factors influence barcode scanner scan DPM code.

1, The products materials such as metal, glass, ceramic and so on reflect scan engine’s light back to it, and that will influence it’s decoding performance.

2, Low contrast rate, since the color of barcode is similar with the products’ surface where used to printing or engraving barcode.

3, It is difficult to make DPM code as good as general printed barcode, since it is deformed, twisted, or damaged.
